Hello and welcome to the Alpha Lambda Chapter of Gamma Phi Beta at the University of British Columbia! My name is Delaney, this year’s Membership Vice President, and I’m thrilled to introduce you to our organization!
Attending a University such as UBC with over 60,000 students, a world-renowned school curriculum and countless social opportunities can be both exciting and overwhelming. Whether you have lived in Vancouver your entire life, or it’s your first time in Canada, the school atmosphere can be intimidating. When I moved to Vancouver in first year, enthusiastic and ready to embark on my undergraduate experience, I remember feeling a bit lost amidst the huge campus and felt I was lacking the support system and close friendships I had left back home. I kept hearing the words “Formal Recruitment” buzzing around my residence building, so I decided to sign up, not knowing the impact this decision would have.
Gamma Phi Beta stood out to me primarily because of how I felt sitting in that room during recruitment: comfortable and at home. I had effortless conversations with a room full of inspiring women. Everyone had different backgrounds, experiences and interests, yet we were all bonded on the four core values that make up our organization: Love, Labour, Learning and Loyalty. This group of phenomenal women continue to inspire me every day. I could not have foreseen how much this organization would both support me and challenge me. The organization gives me the best of many worlds here at UBC. From volunteer opportunities and leadership positions to participating in study groups and playing on sports teams, I am truly getting everything I possibly can out of my undergraduate years at UBC thanks to Gamma Phi Beta.
Being on the other side now, and planning Formal Recruitment for 2019, it’s interesting to reflect on what has made us such a strong organization for all these years. It amazes me how after 145 years since the Sorority began we never fail to recruit equally inspiring women who continue to grow and improve our organization. I like to think our secret is simply being genuine, authentic women who share a strong sisterhood bond. I hope every woman is lucky enough to find herself in an organization where she can be empowered by women as I am here in Gamma Phi Beta. I look forward to meeting another group of incredible young women this Fall in recruitment. Whether you find yourself with us or in another Sorority, I wish you the very best for your time at the University.
