Whether your daughter already is a member of Gamma Phi Beta, or is considering registering for Formal Recruitment, I am sure you have several questions.
I joined the chapter in the fall of 2015, as a first year Science student. Coming to UBC from Norway as an international student, and adjusting to the novelty of not only moving across the world but also being a student felt very overwhelming at first. My only prior knowledge of sororities and the Greek System was what I had seen in movies, but when a few of the friends from residence told me they were registering for Formal Recruitment, I decided to tag along. I had no idea what to expect, but ended up loving every minute of recruitment - and especially my time in the Gamma Phi Beta room.
Becoming a member of this organization will provide your daughter with so many opportunities which allow her to thrive during her time at UBC and beyond. The chapter provides a wide range of programming, including (but not limited to) academic, philanthropic, athletic and social opportunities.
Personally, joining this organization has given me that I even imagined. Life as a student has been better, and I have experienced strong personal and professional growth. Being elected to serve as External Social Chairwoman in 2016 and subsequently as Public Relations Vice President and a member of the Executive Council in 2017, has taught me valuable leadership skills and helped me gain confidence I had no idea I was capable of. Furthermore, I have met some of the most inspiring women I know, both alumni and close friends in my pledge class.
Lastly, Gamma Phi Beta does not only last the one, two, three or four years of membership while at university. Lifelong sisterhood is at the foundation of our organization. The ties built during university are maintained for the rest of our lives, between members of our own pledge class to members who join decades after us. We pride ourselves on strong alumnae engagement to secure the ties that bind us. It would be impossible for me to answer all of your questions in such a short space, so please do not hesitate to contact me with any inquiries you may have, any time of the day or night. I am always happy to share experiences, advice and information.
