Welcome to the Alpha Lambda Chapter of Gamma Phi Beta! My name is Talya Wong and I am the Chapter President here at the University of British Columbia. As I step foot on the UBC campus for the first time just two years ago, never would I have anticipated that I would become a part of such a driven and kind-hearted group of women, let alone have the opportunity to lead them. Gamma Phi Beta is an organization filled with women who are both genuinely excited to see their sisters succeed, yet also ready to relentlessly encourage and support them, picking them back up when they fall. This organization thrives on unconditional love, which is easily one of the biggest reasons as to why I am so proud to call myself a Gamma Phi Beta.
UBC Sororities as a whole widened my perspective on women in the world. I mean, I knew women were awesome, but I just didn’t know how awesome. To declare that the term ‘sorority women’ encompasses the characteristics of all strong women worldwide is a bold statement, and is likely one that you wouldn’t initially agree with if you’re unfamiliar with the Greek system. However, while going through formal recruitment in 2015, I found myself surrounded by a crowd of women who were exceptionally confident, strong, driven and authentic. It’s been two years and this statement has only grown in its truth; though every woman is united through mutual love for our respective organizations, we are individually extraordinary, with diverse passions and backgrounds. Joining the Panhellenic community through Gamma Phi Beta has been eye-opening just as much as it has been exciting and fun.
Though university is undoubtedly a place to grow and learn, for me, university and Gamma Phi Beta are uniquely set apart. The women that make up this organization come from different backgrounds, have a variety of interests and beliefs, and have unique stories to share. Yet, we are all seamlessly connected through our strong values. Every woman in our sorority is constantly striving to inspire the highest type of womanhood, ultimately radiating our four core values of Love, Labour, Learning, and Loyalty. By surrounding yourself with sisters who are constantly yearning to inspire others and challenge what it means to be a strong woman, inevitably motivates you to do the same. In joining Gamma Phi Beta, I have been exposed to an abundance of opportunities, made long-lasting friendships, and joined a supportive environment that has allowed for individual growth which I otherwise would not have had the chance to experience.
I am extremely proud to have found my home in Gamma Phi Beta, and to call each and every one of these women my sisters. I hope you are able to find your home through the opportunities that formal recruitment have to offer! I look forward to hearing about your journey!
